What Is Eternal Life?
Written by Abraham Obadare on May 18, 2016
Eternal life is God’s gift to mankind, through Jesus Christ. We find this truth in ROM. 6:23 which says “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
God sees what we have around us is sin and knows that it is not good, in that it will only result to our death, so He decided to send us a gift that will replace death. The gift is eternal life and this gift is brought to us by Christ Jesus.
Imagine someone sending you a gift or package through UPS, FEDEX, USPS or any other mail carrier; you need to allow the carrier to gain access into your mailbox or your door in order to deliver the gift. This is where the need to allow Jesus into our lives comes in. Before we can receive this gift of eternal life, we have to allow the gift carrier into our lives.
When we say eternal, we mean forever
When we say life, we mean breath, living, existing.
Eternal life would then mean living forever.
What’s desirable in this is that this living forever is not going to be in sickness, hopelessness, fatigue, going to work, struggling, fighting, having high blood pressure, emotional trauma, etc., but in peace forever in the presence of God – with the prince of peace himself. This means that eternal life is not only about how long but also how well. Rev. 21:4 says, “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
As we consider eternal life as both having quantity and quality, one could say that the quantity part of it is still in the future, but the quality part is one that we begin to enjoy now – those who accept the mailman, Jesus into their lives. No wonder the scripture says that whoever believes in him has eternal life. We see this in John 3:36 which says, “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.”
Jesus breaks its down more by saying, “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.” John 5:24
This is awesome: knowing that I can start living in eternal peace right from now. Thanks be to Jesus.
Now let’s take it a step higher as Jesus helps us to define eternal life, so we don’t have to struggle with the definition. He says, “Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.” – John 17:3
Awesome! This means, to know God and Christ is to have and experience eternal life.
Apostle Paul always wanted something and would say, “that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead.” – Philippians 3:10-11
So, how does one know Christ?
First, accept that Jesus Christ as your lord and savior.
Romans 10:9-10 says, “because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.”
1 John 5:11-12 says, “And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.”
Repent of and confess your sins
